I am on this, being a panda, synth-player, and washboardist!

It is long!

It is out today!

It is not an April Fools’ joke!

& it will still exist tomorrow, when music is “supposed” to come out (Tuesday)

“I know now that the end is surely coming. It is coming from far away beyond the shadow of a doubt. When it arrives, the last murder will be done. It will be done like a man, in one stroke. Then the burglars will quit. They will drape themselves in black and bring tiger lilies and other ferocious ideas to the place where I lie, and I will rest content. I think my only regret will be that I had but one life to give for my country, because if I had a lot more I would save a couple for myself. In a word, it will be all right. It will be right as rain that never lets up and there will be no more burglary anywhere that I know of.”

Appreciate this on its own but also for inclusion of names Barton and Matt Wilson.

A comic about self hatred, relationships and the healing power of pizza.

If you know Barton you know that he will order you pizza at the end of a Saturday night and that is why I am okay with my mortality right now.

The Spinto Band has always been a sort of a special band for me too. “Oh Mandy” struck me in particular as well. Sure, it was sort of their “one hit,” and sure, it’s not entirely in line with the rest of their music, but hearing that one song really got me into all their material, and, believe it or not, recorded pop music in general. I was in high school when I first heard it and still a mostly classical pianist who only really listened to jazz and showtunes and never even conceived of writing his own material. Hearing “Oh Mandy” changed all that. I could go on.. but I already have a sort of secret blog where I gush about The Spinto Band on a regular basis so I’ll leave it out of here.

Okay, so no more gushing, but I will post this clip from my SoundCloud in which I talk a little bit about how the band and the song affected me:

Alright then…. TAKE IT [away], Spinto Band!!!!

pomegranatesart:

I remember hearing The Spinto Band’s “Oh Mandy” right around the time Pomegranates started. In some ways it was kind of like one of those songs I’ve always associated with that time in my life. I’m glad this band is still making music, this video is funny. Please people, learn and don’t be a sore winner at board games like these unruly, dorky children.

My SoundCloud

Here’s my SoundCloud. There’s a bunch of old stuff up there dating back to 3 years ago, including some work I did with a full choir in St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. I’m starting to actively upload some new things from da vault while also recording some new minimalist songs for piano and guitar. I could give you a list of reasons why I’m leaning towards this aesthetic, telling you about the time I discussed sweaters with Jeff Mangum at Occupy Wall Street, and listing the merits of the boombox recorder fuzz on early Mountain Goats tracks, but instead I’ll tell you the [mostly] honest truth that I’m simply away from any familiar studio right now and have no choice.

Toxic Teenage VII

One day in the dead of the cold 2010 New York winter, I recorded this podcast about a song by The Spinto Band. Enjoy.

A silly song I wrote and recorded a while ago about dorm life at NYU. Somehow I got all my roommates and frequent visiting friends to sing on it or contribute other silly vocal exclamations. 1003 was our room number in NYU’s Third North residence hall on 3rd ave. between 11th and 12th streets. Greatest location, particularly appreciated in retrospect.

And yes, my roommate Conor really confused the Empire State Building with the Statue of Liberty. Really. How do you do that?

So, a tree DOES make a sound if it falls to the ground and no one is there to hear…. but only if a recording device is handy.

“Hello! I’m a tree, and this is my feed. I’ll be online all day to keep you posted on how I feel.”
